Senators Defect from PDP to APC, Changing Senate Dynamics

On Wednesday, three senators defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), resulting in a decrease of PDP's representation in the Senate from 17 to 14, while APC's numbers increased from 81 to 84. The defectors, whose letters were read during plenary, include Aminu Iya Abba from Adamawa North, Ikra Aliyu Bilbi from Adamawa Central, and a third senator from Zamfara Central.

This move comes just a day after another senator, Banigo Ipalibo from Rivers West, also switched from PDP to APC. Senate President Godswill Akpabio remarked on the unprecedented nature of this mass defection, noting that it mirrors a similar situation in 2018 when APC lost its Senate majority.

The current political landscape is shifting as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections, with APC positioning itself as the dominant party in the Senate.
