Nigerian Senate Suspends Plenary for Party Primaries

The Nigerian Senate has announced the suspension of its plenary sessions later this week to facilitate lawmakers' participation in party primaries in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This decision was communicated during a session on Tuesday, with Senate President Akpabio emphasizing the necessity of this temporary break to allow lawmakers to engage in the nomination process.

Despite the suspension of plenary sessions, Senate committees will continue their duties, and a main session is planned to resume on Thursday to complete ongoing legislative work. Lawmakers have been urged to remain in Abuja for the week to conclude important matters before the break begins.

Akpabio also called on political parties to adjust their schedules to enable lawmakers to fulfill their legislative responsibilities while participating in the primaries, which is a common practice in Nigeria's National Assembly.
