Senate Warns MDAs, GOEs of Sanctions for Defying Summons

On Thursday, the Senate escalated its confrontation with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and government-owned enterprises (GOEs), warning that any institution refusing to comply with legislative summons would face constitutional sanctions. This resolution was prompted by a motion from Senator Sani Musa, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, who accused several revenue-generating agencies of obstructing legislative oversight by failing to appear before the committee or provide requested financial records.

The Senate mandated all MDAs and GOEs to comply with summons and submit necessary documents for oversight. It also called on the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and all ministers to ensure compliance.

The Senate referenced Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution, which empower the National Assembly to investigate public fund management and compel attendance of witnesses. The Senate's decision will be formally communicated to all affected agencies.
