Senate Not an Executive Arm, Says Senator Abdul Ningi

Abdul Ningi, the Senator representing Bauchi Central, stated that the Senate is not an arm of the Executive during a discussion with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Ningi's comments were in response to the failure of various government agencies to answer summons from the National Assembly.

He expressed that the Senate should not continue to plead with these agencies to fulfill their constitutional obligations, stating, “The Senate is not a ministerial position.” Ningi indicated that one of the Senate committees has reported this infraction and suggested that the House could issue a final warning to the non-compliant organizations. If this does not yield results, the committee may escalate the issue by writing to the Senate.

Furthermore, he proposed that the legislature could inform the President of the infraction by his leadership regarding the agencies' non-compliance.
