Senate Commits to State Police Legislation by Year-End

The Senate of Nigeria has assured citizens that legislation to establish state police will be enacted before the end of the year, following the constitutional amendment's approval by 24 state Houses of Assembly. The Ondo State House of Assembly passed the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, to establish State Police Services.
This bill received unanimous support during its second and third readings. States including Osun, Adamawa, Delta, Edo, and others have previously passed the bill, meeting the two-thirds requirement for National Assembly consideration.
Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, stated that the National Assembly aims to finalize the process before the Christmas break. The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, chaired by Femi Gbajabiamila, submitted the draft National Policing Bill, 2026, for review.
The ministry is expected to return validated drafts by October 30, with final consideration before presentation to President Bola Tinubu.
