Senator calls for removal of LG as third tier of govt

Senator Nwebonyi called for the removal of Local Governments (LGs) as the third tier of government in Nigeria during an interview on Arise TV. He argued that the current arrangement perpetuates inequality and hinders grassroots development.

Nwebonyi highlighted the imbalance in the number of LGs across states, with some having significantly more than others, leading to grievances and agitation. He emphasized the need for LGs to operate independently from state governments, as currently, they are under the control of governors.

Nwebonyi pointed out that the Constitution allows for the creation of new states through a formal request and referendum process. He revealed that 61 proposals for new states have been received, with the Southeast region prioritizing the creation of states like Adada, Aba, and Anioma.

Nwebonyi stressed the importance of leadership quality in determining the viability of new states, rather than relying solely on natural resources.
