Senegal Reports First Mpox Case of 2024, Patient Isolated

Senegal's Health Ministry confirmed the detection of its first mpox case in 2024, involving a patient who arrived from a foreign nation last week. The patient is in stable condition and is currently isolated while receiving medical treatment.

A spokesperson from the ministry confirmed that no additional cases have been detected following the initial diagnosis. Health officials have identified 25 individuals as potential contacts and are actively monitoring them to prevent possible transmission of the disease.

This case emerges against the backdrop of the World Health Organization's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency in August 2024, primarily due to significant outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and subsequent spread to neighboring African nations. Senegal's health authorities have implemented standard mpox response protocols, including patient isolation and contact tracing.

The health ministry has not disclosed whether the current case involves the more severe Congo Basin clade or the less severe West African clade of the virus.
