SERAP Demands INEC Account for N126bn Electoral Spending

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to explain N126.46 billion in electoral expenditures highlighted in the Auditor-General of the Federation’s 2023 report, published on August 7, 2026. SERAP's letter, dated September 12, 2026, and signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, requests detailed information on payments, beneficiaries, contracts, and procurement processes.

The Auditor-General flagged N112.155 billion for ballot boxes and electoral devices, noting a lack of competitive bidding and proper procurement documentation. SERAP also pointed out N1.058 billion for vehicles without proper bidding processes, and N3.136 billion paid to contractors before contracts were awarded.

Additional concerns included N9.245 billion for contracts awarded on the same day, potentially bypassing procurement procedures. SERAP urged INEC to report any financial irregularities to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
