SERAP Takes Legal Action Against INEC Over Missing Funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its failure to account for more than ₦126.46 billion appropriated for electoral operations. SERAP alleges that these funds were diverted, lost, mismanaged, or otherwise unaccounted for.
The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2507/2026, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja. SERAP is seeking an order of mandamus to compel INEC to disclose detailed information on the expenditure, utilization, and disbursement of the funds intended for election materials and services.
The allegations stem from the 2023 audited report of the Auditor-General of the Federation, published on August 7, 2026, covering infractions from January to December 2022 and extending to December 31, 2023. SERAP emphasizes the importance of transparency and accountability in managing electoral funds, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching.
