SERAP Demands Probe into N78.8 Billion Cash Irregularities

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for an immediate investigation into alleged irregularities concerning N78.8 billion in the federal government’s cash-transfer and social protection programmes. This demand was made in a letter dated September 5, 2026, signed by SERAP's deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, referencing findings from the 2024 Annual Report of the Auditor-General of the Federation, published on August 7, 2026.

SERAP urged the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO), and the National Social Safety Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO) to account for funds that may have been diverted or irregularly spent. Specific concerns include N33.751 billion transferred to over 3 million households without evidence of receipt, N36.74 billion paid without proper audits, and N4.616 billion spent without adequate documentation.

SERAP has demanded the recovery of improperly spent funds and the prosecution of those responsible, giving the government seven days to respond before considering legal action.
