SERAP Sues INEC Over Alleged N800bn Campaign Fund Diversion

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its alleged inaction regarding the diversion of N800 billion by governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for campaign purposes. The lawsuit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja under case number FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2026, requests an order of mandamus to compel INEC to investigate these allegations and disclose the names of donors and the origins of the funds.

SERAP argues that the alleged diversion raises serious concerns about political financing transparency and electoral fairness, which are fundamental rights of Nigerians. The organization emphasizes that opaque political financing poses a significant risk to the integrity of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The suit also highlights the need for INEC to enforce compliance with Section 91 of the Electoral Act, which mandates limits on political donations and requires disclosure of funding sources.
