SERAP Sues NNPC Over Missing Oil Funds in Landmark Corruption Lawsuit

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over the alleged misappropriation of oil funds amounting to N22.3 billion, $49.7 million, $14.3 million, and $5.2 million. The lawsuit, filed in the Federal High Court in Abuja, aims to compel NNPC to account for the missing funds and disclose specific financial transactions related to the alleged diversion.

SERAP highlights the detrimental impact of missing oil funds on Nigeria's economy and the perpetuation of poverty due to corruption in the oil sector. The lawsuit emphasizes the need to restore public trust, address corruption, and uphold transparency in managing Nigeria's oil resources.

SERAP's legal representatives cite the Auditor General's reports detailing irregularities in NNPC's financial management, including unaccounted payments, abandoned contracts, and diversion of oil revenues.
