SERAP Sues Power Minister and NBET Over Alleged ₦128 Billion Missing Funds

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against the Minister of Power and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET) at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/143/2026, follows revelations in the Auditor General of the Federation's 2022 audit report published on September 9, 2025, indicating the alleged misappropriation of ₦128 billion in public funds.

SERAP is seeking a court order to compel NBET to disclose comprehensive details of how the funds were spent, including dates of disbursement, names of contractors, beneficiaries, and authorized transaction participants. The group highlights the impact of corruption in the power sector, leading to recurrent national grid collapses and inadequate electricity supply, causing hardship for Nigerians.

SERAP's legal team, led by Kolawole Oluwadare, is relying on provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the Freedom of Information Act, and international anti-corruption conventions to demand transparency and accountability from public institutions.
