IRCC Advises on Common Mistakes for Citizenship Applications

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued guidance for applicants seeking citizenship certificates under Canada’s new citizenship by descent law, urging them to meticulously review their application packages to avoid common mistakes that could result in delays. The warning was shared via a post on Canadavisa’s X handle.

IRCC's updated document checklist (CIT 0014) mandates that applicants provide supporting documents from original issuing authorities, such as civil registries or provincial archives, as third-party records are insufficient. Applicants unable to secure original records must provide a written explanation and evidence of their attempts.

The agency emphasized that photocopies must be high-resolution and in color, and original documents should only be submitted if specifically requested. Additionally, applicants must meet citizenship photo requirements, complete all sections of the application forms, and ensure that forms are signed and dated correctly.

Unsigned applications will be returned. As of July 2026, proof of citizenship applications are taking approximately 19 months to process.
