Shangisha Landlords Demand Enforcement of Court Judgments

The Shangisha/Magodo Landlords Association has renewed its demand for the enforcement of court judgments that require the Lagos State Government to allocate 549 plots of land to its members. The association accuses the government of defying a Supreme Court judgment that has been in favor of the landlords for over four decades.

The dispute began when the Lagos State Government compulsorily acquired the land between 1984 and 1985 for an international-standard hospital, leading to the demolition of homes and displacement of residents. Despite a resolution for compensation with alternative plots in Magodo Scheme II, the government failed to implement it.

The association filed Suit No. ID/795/88 in June 1988, and despite an injunction granted in 1992 and a judgment in their favor on December 31, 1993, enforcement attempts faced resistance, including violence against members.

The Supreme Court affirmed the lower court decisions on February 10, 2012, but the association claims the government has yet to comply with the judgment.
