Sharia Council Calls for Rule of Law in El-Rufai's Detention

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) issued a statement on August 31, 2026, concerning the continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. Signed by Secretary-General Nafiu Baba Ahmad, the statement called for adherence to the rule of law, asserting that El-Rufai is entitled to fundamental rights and presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The Council expressed concern over the circumstances of his detention and the challenges he faces in meeting bail conditions, which may violate legal procedures and constitutional safeguards. SCSN emphasized that Nigeria, as a constitutional democracy, must respect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their status or political affiliation.

The Council warned against actions that could be seen as politically motivated persecution, stating that such actions could undermine public confidence in state institutions. It reiterated the importance of due process and fair hearing as fundamental pillars of justice, asserting that justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
