Kwankwaso Critiques US Congress Bill on Nigeria's Sharia Law

Rabi'u Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and current presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), responded to a proposed bill in the US Congress aimed at imposing sanctions on Nigeria due to alleged violations of religious freedom. In an interview on Arise Television, Kwankwaso described the bill as the "handiwork of indigenous enemies" of Nigeria.

He referenced the introduction of Sharia law in Zamfara in the year 2000, suggesting that the situation has been misrepresented. Kwankwaso expressed irony over the bill, stating that it was written without proper legislative process and that he had not seen any tangible actions to stop it.

He noted that the bill, which is part of the Human Rights Accountability Act 2026, includes provisions for potential sanctions against Fulani militias. Kwankwaso criticized the lack of enthusiasm among local lawmakers regarding the bill and emphasized that the situation has been mischaracterized over time.
