Kwankwaso Faces U.S. Blacklisting Over Sharia Law Claims

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), disclosed that his name was submitted to the United States Congress for potential blacklisting. This action is part of a proposed bill aimed at imposing sanctions against him and the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) for alleged violations of religious freedom.

The bill, known as the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act 2026, seeks to compel the U.S. Department of State and Treasury to impose a visa ban and freeze assets of Kwankwaso and MACBAN.

During an interview on Arise Television's prime time on Monday, Kwankwaso expressed surprise at being blamed for the implementation of Sharia law in Kano, which he claims has been misrepresented.
