Shehu Sani Warns Against Legal Ignorance in Nigeria

Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central Senator, recounted his detention during the regime of the late military head of state, General Sani Abacha, in a Facebook post on Thursday. He warned Nigerians about the dangers of ignorance regarding the law.

Sani was imprisoned in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos in 1995 for allegedly attempting to overthrow the Abacha government. During his detention, he wrote letters to prominent activists, including Gani Fawehinmi and Femi Falana, seeking support for the release of detainees.

He noted that Fawehinmi and Falana, both legal practitioners, handled the situation cautiously, organizing protests without publicizing their letters. Sani spent four years in prison until General Abdulsalami Abubakar granted him freedom.

He expressed regret over the hardships endured during imprisonment and stressed the importance of basic legal knowledge to prevent individuals from creating legal problems for themselves through careless actions or public statements.
