Shettima to Open Editors' Conference on Democracy in Enugu

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) will host a two-day conference in Enugu at The Dome, International Conference Centre, starting at 2pm on Thursday, September 25. Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to declare the conference open and will address participants on the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” along with the sub-theme, “When Lies Look Real: Detecting and Debunking AI Disinformation Before, During and After Election.” Enugu State Governor Dr Peter Mbah will also speak.

The conference is expected to attract over 500 editors, government officials, academics, and civil society representatives. His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe will chair the event, with John Cardinal Onaiyekan delivering the keynote address.

Other speakers include Professor Auwal Yadudu, Mazi Afam Osigwe, Mr Martins Oloja, Owei Lakemfa, Professor Chinyere Okunna, Dr Richard Okoye, and Farooq A. Kperogi, who will discuss various topics related to democracy, press freedom, and the impact of artificial intelligence on disinformation.
