Shoprite Nigeria to Launch Neighbourhood Stores Amid Recovery

Shoprite Nigeria is set to open standalone neighbourhood stores as part of its recovery strategy following financial difficulties that necessitated a business restructuring. Adekunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director, Investments at MBO Capital Management Limited, revealed this during an interview on Nairametrics’ Drinks and Mics.
He stated that three Shoprite outlets had reopened after a temporary shutdown to negotiate with suppliers and address financial obligations. Adebiyi explained that the company aims to focus on smaller outlets in residential areas rather than large shopping malls, which will allow for better resource allocation.
He noted that Shoprite's business model, which relies on leased premises, has made it challenging to secure conventional bank financing due to the lack of tangible assets. Additionally, foreign exchange volatility has exacerbated financial pressures, with many rental agreements denominated in dollars.
Operational challenges, including inventory management weaknesses and the need for significant investment to replace an enterprise resource planning system, have further complicated recovery efforts.
