Tinubu Returns to Nigeria Amid Political and Economic Crises

President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria this weekend after a four-week working vacation in London and Paris. Upon his return, he will confront several unresolved issues, primarily an escalating crisis involving the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding his cross-party Rainbow Coalition.

The PGF claims this coalition threatens APC candidates in several states ahead of the 2027 elections. Wike has publicly criticized certain governors, labeling them as “politically lazy.” Additionally, there are allegations that discontented governors are considering an alliance with Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate.

Furthermore, opposition figures have raised constitutional concerns about Tinubu’s extended leave. The president also faces a petrol price crisis, with prices ranging from N1,385 to N1,850 per litre, and labor unions are demanding stabilization of prices and wage increases.

The Nigeria Labour Congress supports these demands, while the Academic Staff Union of Universities threatens to resume its suspended strike.
