SOKAPU Sues Umahi Over Nurse's Death, Seeks ₦20bn Compensation

The Incorporated Trustees of the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ United Association (SOKAPU) have initiated legal proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna against David Umahi, the Minister of Works, concerning the death of nurse Mary Habila, who was part of Umahi's medical team. The lawsuit demands an autopsy to ascertain the cause of Habila's death and seeks ₦20 billion in compensation, alleging negligence in duty of care while she was under Umahi's supervision.

Mary Habila passed away on June 27 at Umahi's residence, prompting public outcry and calls for a thorough investigation. Alongside Umahi, the suit includes Habila Tanko Wisdom, the deceased's father, the Attorney-General of Ebonyi State, and the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State as respondents.

SOKAPU aims to compel authorities to conduct an independent post-mortem examination. The Ebonyi State Police Command has indicated that an autopsy will proceed despite some family opposition, and Umahi has requested the police to carry out the autopsy to facilitate the investigation.

The court has yet to schedule proceedings.
