NiMet Warns of Flood Risks in 13 Nigerian States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued a flood warning on its X handle, indicating that Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are at high risk of flooding in August. This advisory is based on forecasts of rainfall intensity, soil moisture, drainage capacity, terrain, and dam characteristics.

NiMet aims to support early preparedness, emergency response, and disaster risk reduction. The agency warned that flash floods could occur in low-lying, urban, and riverside communities, leading to road closures, traffic congestion, and disruptions in electricity and telecommunications services.

Additionally, heavy rainfall may reduce visibility, affecting road and aviation operations. Waterlogging could damage farmlands and livestock, while stagnant floodwaters may increase the risk of waterborne diseases.

NiMet advised residents to heed weather forecasts, avoid flooded areas, and urged emergency management authorities to enhance preparedness and response measures.
