NiMet Warns of Flash Floods in 13 Northern States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of possible flash floods across 13 northern states between August 11 and 20, 2026. The advisory, posted on NiMet's X handle, identifies the states at risk: Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

The warning is based on factors such as forecast rainfall intensity, soil moisture conditions, drainage capacity, terrain, and dam characteristics. NiMet indicated that localized flash flooding could occur, particularly in low-lying, urban, and riverside communities, leading to traffic congestion, road closures, and disruptions to electricity and telecommunications.

The agency cautioned that heavy rainfall could impair visibility for motorists and aviation operations, while waterlogging might damage farmlands and livestock. NiMet advised residents to heed weather forecasts and flood advisories, avoid flooded areas, and prepare to evacuate if necessary.

Emergency management agencies were urged to enhance surveillance and preparedness, while farmers were advised to improve drainage and relocate livestock and produce from flood-prone areas.
