NIHSA Issues Flood Alert for 17 States from July 21-27

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a seven-day flood alert, indicating that 17 states, including Adamawa, Borno, and Kaduna, are at medium risk of flooding from July 21 to July 27, 2026. NIHSA Director-General Umar Ibrahim-Mohammed stated that continuous hydrological monitoring has shown critical river gauging stations reaching dangerous levels, with key sites like Saminara on the Karam River and Waya Dam Site on the Waya River exceeding warning thresholds.

The agency identified 16 critical gauging stations nationwide reporting elevated water levels, posing a direct risk to riverine communities. To mitigate the impending risk, Ibrahim-Mohammed directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), local governments, and community leaders to initiate immediate emergency responses, including evacuating residents in flood-prone areas and relocating livestock.

NIHSA also called for the pre-positioning of essential relief materials and activation of local early warning systems.
