SON Launches National LPG Cylinder Recirculation Programme

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), alongside government and industry stakeholders, launched the National Cylinder Recirculation Programme (NCRP) on 23 October 2026 at SON’s Operational Headquarters in Lagos. This initiative aims to enhance the safety, identification, management, and recirculation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders while supporting Nigeria’s domestic gas expansion and clean energy transition.
The NCRP introduces a framework for cylinder registration, inspection, requalification, digital tracking, and safe recirculation, addressing safety concerns related to expired and improperly maintained cylinders. Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of SON, emphasized the importance of strict adherence to cylinder quality standards and effective lifecycle tracking.
The programme includes a virtual Cylinder Recirculation Management System that assigns digital identities to cylinders, facilitating their tracking throughout the supply chain. The NCRP aims to stimulate domestic cylinder manufacturing, attract private investment, create jobs, and support enterprise development in the gas distribution sector.
