South-East Nigeria Hosts Inaugural Basketball Championship

The South-East region of Nigeria is experiencing a resurgence in basketball, marked by the first South-East Basketball Championship held from June 5-7, 2026, in Ebonyi State. This event, which aims to empower youth and discover talent, was highlighted by the commissioning of a new basketball court donated by Ugo Udezu, who spoke on behalf of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

The championship is significant as it marks the first time Ebonyi has hosted a tournament of this magnitude. Ugo Udezu, representing the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has been instrumental in promoting basketball in the region.

However, there are concerns regarding the legitimacy of the new court, with Victor Okoro, Chairman of the Abia State Basketball Association, questioning its impact and suggesting it is merely a renovation of an old facility. Kelechi Anosik, a former chairman of the state’s basketball association, echoed these sentiments, indicating skepticism about the project's authenticity.

Despite the controversy, the event aims to provide a platform for young players and foster regional camaraderie.
