Southampton Disqualified from Playoffs for Spying Scandal

Southampton has been disqualified from the playoffs for the 2025-26 season after admitting to spying on rival clubs, specifically Middlesbrough, Oxford United, and Ipswich Town. The independent disciplinary commission determined that Southampton breached regulations requiring clubs to conduct themselves in good faith, particularly regarding training sessions.

The incident involved filming Middlesbrough's training session ahead of their playoff semi-final fixture against Southampton earlier in the month. Following a complaint from Middlesbrough, an investigation by the EFL revealed that similar incidents had occurred earlier in the season.

As a result, Southampton will face a significant penalty, including a four-point deduction in the upcoming Championship league table, which could severely impact their chances of promotion to the Premier League, a match estimated to be worth £110 million. Southampton has indicated plans to appeal the punishment, which they consider harsh.

Ticket holders for the Wembley final will receive refunds pending the resolution of the case.
