Soyinka Urges Tinubu to Address Unresolved Killings

During the 28th Wole Soyinka Lecture organized by the National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka called on President Bola Tinubu to reopen investigations into unresolved assassinations and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.

Soyinka warned that the failure to prosecute perpetrators fosters a culture of impunity, undermining democracy and the rule of law. He recalled that President Tinubu had previously requested files on these unresolved cases and urged him to ensure that investigations are revived and concluded.

Soyinka stated that unresolved cases embolden criminals and erode public confidence in the justice system, stressing that accountability must be universal. He dedicated his lecture to victims of avoidable killings, citing specific incidents such as the 2022 lynching of Deborah Yakubu and recent police actions.

Soyinka concluded by urging the Federal Government to commit to institutional reforms that prioritize human rights and lawful operations of security agencies.
