Spain Named World's Tourism Powerhouse, Madrid Global Tourism Capital

Spain has become a dominant force in global tourism, welcoming a record near 97 million foreign visitors in a year, surpassing the previous year's total of 94 million. Madrid has been named the Global Tourism Capital, with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) selecting it as the new headquarters location starting in 2026.

Spain's tourism sector contributes significantly to its economy, accounting for 12.6% of its GDP. The country's tourism strategy aims to attract higher-spending visitors for longer stays throughout the year, diversifying economic opportunities beyond traditional hotspots.

However, Spain's success has raised concerns about overtourism, with issues such as overcrowding, inflated housing costs, and strain on infrastructure in popular destinations like Barcelona. Efforts are being made to address these challenges, including promoting less-visited regions and sustainable tourism practices.
