Senate Supports Bill for Social Media Offices in Nigeria

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate advanced a legislative proposal requiring social media platforms to establish physical offices within Nigeria, garnering significant support from stakeholders during a public hearing. The bill, titled "A bill for an Act to Alter the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023," was sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North.

During the hearing, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, noted that the legislation aims to protect the nation's cyberspace. Senator Godwill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Leader Senator Lola Ashiru, described the bill as a forward-looking initiative that reflects the Senate's commitment to improved governance.

Senator Nwoko assured that the bill is not punitive or hostile to innovation, but rather encourages social media platforms to engage more deeply with Nigeria. He pointed out that similar requirements exist in other countries, highlighting the global trend of major tech companies establishing local offices.
