Starlink to Launch 5G Connectivity via New Satellites

Starlink, led by Elon Musk, has unveiled plans to deliver 5G connectivity directly to smartphones through its upcoming Starlink Mobile V2 satellites. This initiative aims to provide full cellular coverage, including 5G capabilities, significantly expanding connectivity in rural and underserved regions, such as Nigeria.

The new satellites are designed with advanced custom silicon and an array antenna capable of supporting thousands of spatial beams, enabling a throughput that is 20 times higher than the first generation of satellites. This system will allow users to connect seamlessly to mobile networks from virtually anywhere, enhancing the capacity for high-speed mobile connections.

The satellites will work in conjunction with existing terrestrial mobile networks, allowing smartphones to switch between satellite coverage and ground-based 5G infrastructure without service interruptions. Starlink's mobile service will be deployed in partnership with mobile network operators, rather than directly to consumers.

MTN Group has previously announced plans to provide satellite services, including Starlink, to expand its offerings in underserved areas.
