Nigeria's National Assembly Passes State Police Bill

The National Assembly of Nigeria passed a bill to establish state police, with the House of Representatives approving it on June 10, 2026, followed by the Senate on June 24, 2026. This legislation is a response to ongoing security challenges, particularly since the rise of Boko Haram in 2009 and subsequent banditry and kidnapping across the country.

Advocates for state police have argued for its necessity since the 2014 National Conference, which recommended its creation. The bill includes provisions to prevent abuse by state governors, such as establishing an independent state police service commission that will oversee recruitment, promotion, and discipline.

The National Police Council will also have a role in ensuring accountability. The legislation aims to balance power and prevent misuse by governors, who will be held responsible for security in their states.

The federal government will increase monthly allocations to states, which will now bear the brunt of security responsibilities.
