Senate Confident in State Police Bill Approval Process

The Senate has stated there is no significant opposition to the proposed establishment of state police, with confidence that the constitutional amendment bill will receive the necessary approval from 24 state Houses of Assembly. Yemi Adaramodu, the chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, shared this information in an interview with The PUNCH.
The State Police Services Bill was transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, as part of the constitutional alteration process, with a 30-day deadline for review, expiring on October 15. Currently, only Edo, Oyo, Osun, and Rivers states have approved the bill.
Adaramodu noted that while not all Nigerians may support the proposal, a majority favor state police as a solution to security challenges. He assured that the current 10th Senate would complete the process before the next assembly.
The National Assembly expects responses from the state legislatures soon.
