LSACA Urges Stronger Protections Against HIV Stigma

The Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has issued a warning that stigma, discrimination, gender-based violence (GBV), and denial of essential services could undermine HIV prevention and control efforts in Lagos State. Folakemi Animashaun, the Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, made this statement on Thursday at the conclusion of a two-day Legal and Rights Protection Training for GBV focal persons, service providers, and linkage officers held at the Lagos State Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Animashaun emphasized the need for stronger legal and rights-protection mechanisms for individuals living with HIV and survivors of GBV. She noted that experiences of abuse and discrimination could deter individuals from seeking necessary HIV testing and treatment.

The training facilitator, Ochibili Chioma, highlighted the importance of confidentiality in handling sensitive information shared by clients. The training aimed to enhance the capacity of frontline workers to identify rights violations and improve access to legal, health, and psychosocial services for vulnerable populations.
