NACA Warns Against Misinformation in HIV Prevention Efforts

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a warning that misinformation, stigma, and sensational reporting could undermine Nigeria’s efforts to prevent new HIV infections. Dr.

Temitope Ilori, the Director-General of NACA, made this statement on Thursday in Lagos during a national training for journalists and social media influencers on HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), organized in collaboration with the World Health Organisation. Ilori stressed that the fight against HIV extends beyond the availability of medicines and services, highlighting the necessity for Nigerians to access accurate information to make informed health decisions.

She identified PrEP as an effective prevention option for HIV-negative individuals at risk of acquiring the virus, noting that its impact depends on public awareness, understanding, accessibility, and willingness to use it. Ilori urged media professionals to provide accurate, evidence-based information to combat fear and stigma surrounding HIV prevention.

This warning aligns with Nigeria's strengthened HIV prevention strategy under the National Strategic Plan for HIV and AIDS 2026–2030.
