NTDA's Ola Awakan Advocates for Tourism Growth in Nigeria

Ola Awakan, the Director-General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), stated that storytelling and increased private-sector participation are essential for unlocking the economic potential of Nigeria's tourism assets. In an interview with Arise News, Awakan highlighted that Nigeria possesses a wealth of cultural, heritage, and tourism narratives that are largely untold.

He asserted that effectively packaging these stories could draw visitors and investments to various destinations across the country. Awakan described tourism as a "gold mine" that could significantly contribute to Nigeria's economic diversification, reducing reliance on oil.

He noted that his approach to promoting tourism is influenced by his background as a storyteller and his understanding of Nigeria's cultural and tourism landscape. Awakan argued that while the government should create a supportive policy environment, the private sector must lead sustainable tourism initiatives.

He pointed to successful public-private collaborations, such as the involvement of private investors in attractions like Olumo Rock, as examples of how to enhance tourism development.
