FCT ASUSS Declares Independence from NUT Strike

The Federal Capital Territory chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (FCT ASUSS), under the leadership of Chairman Mr. Julius Ogundiran, has publicly stated that its members will not participate in the indefinite strike called by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

This declaration was made during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday. Ogundiran asserted that ASUSS members are not part of NUT's demands and will continue their academic activities.

He cited constitutional provisions, specifically Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees individuals the freedom to associate and choose their union affiliations. He also mentioned that the issues affecting secondary school staff, including wage awards and teacher vacancies, have not been adequately addressed by the FCT administration.

Ogundiran's comments were supported by ASUSS Secretary Peter Afolayan, who dismissed rumors regarding the union's legitimacy and confirmed their affiliation with the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
