Alberta Premier Warns International Students on Visas

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith stated that international students should be aware that study permits in Canada are temporary and do not guarantee permanent residency. She made these comments amid concerns from students, particularly from India, regarding difficulties in obtaining Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) after completing their programs.

Smith emphasized that students should view their education as a means to gain qualifications rather than a direct path to immigration. Following protests from students at Portage College, who faced challenges in securing PGWPs, Smith acknowledged that some educational providers may have misrepresented immigration opportunities.

She clarified that if an international student's visa expires without securing permanent residency, they are expected to return home. Smith's remarks coincide with the Canadian government's tightening of international student and temporary immigration policies, warning against unauthorized work, which could lead to severe immigration consequences.
