Sultan of Sokoto's Stepmother Dies; Governor Pays Condolences

Sultan Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III is bereaved following the passing of his stepmother, Hajiya Nana Asma'u, who died last Tuesday. Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu visited the Sultan at his palace on Thursday to offer formal condolences on behalf of the state.

During the visit, Governor Aliyu characterised the death as a substantial loss extending beyond the royal household to affect Sokoto State and Nigeria more broadly. He noted that Hajiya Nana Asma'u had held a significant maternal position within the royal family, and her absence would create a difficult void to address.

The governor urged the Sultan and other family members to view the passing as predetermined by divine will. Governor Aliyu offered prayers for the deceased's soul and requested forgiveness for any shortcomings during her lifetime.

The sources indicate Hajiya Nana Asma'u was approximately 100 years old at the time of her death. Beyond the palace visit, the governor also extended condolences to other bereaved families in Sokoto during the same period.

The Sultan, one of Nigeria's most prominent traditional rulers, presides over the Sokoto Sultanate, a position of considerable cultural and religious significance in northern Nigeria. The condolence visit reflects the customary protocols observed among state officials and traditional leadership in response to deaths within royal households.
