SERAP rejects proposed salary hike for President, govs, lawmakers

Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) has rejected the proposed salary hike for President, governors, and lawmakers, urging President Bola Tinubu to halt the unconstitutional move. In a letter dated August 23, 2025, SERAP criticized the gross misuse of power by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) in proposing the salary increase.

RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Bello claimed the current salaries were paltry and had remained unchanged since 2008, but SERAP argued that the proposed increase was unjustifiable, especially when millions of Nigerians are impoverished. SERAP reminded President Tinubu of a court judgment directing RMAFC to review salaries downward to reflect economic reality.

The organization warned that if their demands were not met within seven days, they would take legal action to compel the government and RMAFC to comply.
