South West Lawmakers Honor Reuben Fasoranti at 100

On Sunday, South West lawmakers celebrated Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti on the occasion of his 100th birthday, recognizing his steadfast defense of Yoruba interests and his significant role in Nigeria's democratic struggles. The South West Caucus, comprising federal lawmakers from six South West states, conveyed tributes through a statement issued by the caucus chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

Bamidele praised Fasoranti as the last surviving disciple of late nationalist Obafemi Awolowo and acknowledged his fearless advocacy against military dictatorship, which contributed to the restoration of democracy in Nigeria on May 29, 1999. Despite the return to democratic rule, Fasoranti remains committed to pursuing peace and prosperity in Nigeria.

The lawmakers emphasized the need for constitutional reform, including the establishment of state police to tackle insecurity, and the creation of regional development commissions to address infrastructure deficits across the six geopolitical zones.
