Tundu Lissu's Treason Trial Resumes Amidst Political Tensions

Tundu Lissu, the chairman of the opposition Chadema party, is currently facing a treason trial in Tanzania, having been in custody since April 2025. Treason in Tanzania is punishable by death.

Lissu has publicly accused prosecutors of intentionally delaying the trial to prolong his remand custody, stating that the delays are meant to "waste time." The trial was previously suspended in February after prosecutors appealed a ruling that permitted additional evidence to be presented. However, Tanzania’s Court of Appeal dismissed this appeal last month, allowing the trial to resume.

Chadema has characterized the hearing as a crucial test of Tanzania's commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political freedoms. The party has accused the government of using the prosecution as a means to suppress legitimate political opposition.

Lissu's trial occurs amidst ongoing criticism of the Tanzanian government's handling of protests related to last year's elections, with supporters alleging that President Samia Suluhu Hassan's administration has revived repressive tactics reminiscent of former President John Magufuli's regime.
