Team Nigeria Finishes Sixth at Glasgow 2026 Games

Team Nigeria concluded the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in sixth place on the overall medals table, securing a total of 23 medals: 10 gold, 7 silver, and 6 bronze. This outcome fell short of the National Sports Commission's ambitious target of 22 gold medals, which was projected by Director General Bukola Olopade, citing support from NSC chairman Shehu Dikko and President Bola Tinubu.

The performance was a decline from the previous Games in Birmingham, where Nigeria won 35 medals, including 12 gold. Despite the shortfall, Team Nigeria achieved significant milestones, including Samuel Ogazi winning Nigeria's first-ever Commonwealth gold in the men's 400m and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi winning the men's shot put title.

Other notable medalists included Ezekiel Nathaniel, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Ruth Usoro, Udodi Onwuzurike, and Kayinsola Ajayi. Enku Ekuta also secured a bronze in judo, marking a 24-year wait for a Nigerian medal in that sport.

The NSC enhanced athlete welfare during the Games, increasing bonuses for medalists.
