Team Nigeria Secures 3 Gold Medals at Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria has made a strong start at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, achieving three gold medals and three silver medals on the opening day, which has positioned them second on the medals table. Australia leads with six gold medals.

The success was primarily in para powerlifting, showcasing Nigeria's prowess in the sport. Roland Ezuruike earned a silver medal in the men’s lightweight Group A event, scoring 153.9 points.

He narrowly missed a Commonwealth Games record lift of 190kg. The National Sports Commission rewarded him with a $2,000 cash award and a $3,000 performance bonus.

Esther Nworgu claimed Nigeria's first gold medal in the women’s lightweight para powerlifting event, lifting 123kg and scoring 119 points, breaking the Commonwealth Games record twice. She received a $5,000 cash reward and an additional $5,000 performance bonus.

Esther Oyema also contributed by winning a silver medal in the same event, lifting 125kg.
