Tekno Questions Fela's Sole Originator Status in Afrobeats

Nigerian singer Augustine Miles Kelechi, known as Tekno, has ignited a debate regarding the origins of Afrobeats by challenging the perception that the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is its sole originator. In an interview with Hot 97 FM in New York, Tekno acknowledged Fela's significant contributions to Afrobeat and his role in popularizing the genre internationally.

However, he argued that other Nigerian music legends, particularly highlife musician Oliver De Coque, also played crucial roles in the development of Afrobeats. Tekno stated, “Fela is not the originator of Afrobeats,” highlighting that musicians from Nigeria’s South-East, including De Coque, contributed to the musical foundation of contemporary Afrobeats.

He expressed a personal connection to De Coque's music, which he grew up listening to, and emphasized that many earlier musicians deserve recognition for their influence. Despite his critique, Tekno recognized Fela's global impact and the importance of his performances in promoting Afrobeat worldwide.
