Timaya Honors Fela Kuti's Impact on Nigerian Music

Nigerian singer Timaya acknowledged the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti for his significant role in popularizing Nigerian music both locally and internationally. Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Timaya described Fela as a major inspiration, stating that his influence extends beyond Nigeria, particularly in Cameroon, where Fela is highly revered.

Timaya expressed deep respect for Fela, stating, “Without Fela, nobody would have known us and we wouldn’t be here singing music.” He noted that in Cameroon, Fela's music is celebrated, with dedicated radio programs honoring him. Timaya's remarks come in the context of a recent debate among Nigerian artists regarding Fela's status in music history.

Afrobeats singer Tekno recently stated in an interview with Yanga FM Lagos that he does not consider Fela his "king" of music, instead naming highlife musician Oliver De Coque as his musical idol, citing his upbringing in Kaduna as a factor in his musical influences.
