NJC Investigates Senior Judges Over Serious Misconduct

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has commenced a discreet investigation into several high-ranking judges in Nigeria, including Chief Justice Kudirat Keker Ekun. This action follows numerous petitions alleging serious misconduct, including forgery and false asset declarations.

The NJC, a 24-member body responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judicial officers in Nigeria, is led by Chief Justice Keker Ekun. The investigation was triggered by disturbing allegations that have raised concerns about the integrity of the judiciary.

Chief Justice Keker Ekun has ordered an urgent probe to identify culpable individuals, emphasizing the need to restore public confidence in the judiciary. The NJC has received multiple complaints and aims to handle the inquiry with strict confidentiality.

Since Keker Ekun assumed office in August 2024, there have been efforts to implement reforms to enhance transparency and accountability within the judiciary. Previous disciplinary measures included the compulsory retirement of judges found guilty of misconduct.
