NJC Investigates Senior Judges Over Serious Misconduct

The Nigerian Judiciary Council (NJC) has commenced a discreet investigation into several high-ranking judges, including Chief Justice Kudirat Keker Ekun, due to serious allegations of misconduct, including forgery and falsification of asset declarations. The NJC, a 24-member body responsible for the appointment, promotion, and discipline of judicial officers in Nigeria, is led by Chief Justice Keker Ekun.

The probe was triggered by multiple petitions filed against unnamed senior judicial officers, prompting Chief Justice Ekun to order an urgent investigation to identify culpable individuals and cleanse the judiciary. The NJC has received several complaints regarding serious misconduct, which has deeply disturbed its members.

The Chief Justice aims to take swift administrative action to prevent further erosion of public confidence in the judiciary. Since assuming office in August 2024, she has acknowledged a troubling trend in public trust and has vowed to implement reforms.

The NJC previously imposed disciplinary measures on judges found guilty of misconduct, including compulsory retirements and suspensions.
